The Furman Rugby Camp was established in 2008 by John Roberts, Nigel Platt and Vince Atkinson who have a combined 80 years of experience coaching, playing and officiating rugby, mostly in the Southeast. Its mission is to foster youth rugby development, good sportsmanship and camaraderie through summer clinics.
The inaugeral Clinic was held at Furman University (Greenville, S.C.) July 11-15, in 2009. The 2011 will be held at Furman July 9-13.
Training sessions are held at Furman’s rugby stadium. Constructed in 2008 it is the finest rugby-only university facility in the Southeast. Participants also train on a Pedator Training Machine. John Roberts Field, named after the Paladin’s Rugby Coach, was originally constructed as a training field for the Atlanta Falcons, an NFL team that formerly held summer camps at Furman. John Roberts Field hosted Rugby South College Championship Final Four Tournaments 2003-06. During July, 2008 the rugby pitch hosted Clermont, a French professional rugby team, during a weeklong training camp.
Our athletes will learn in a very fun, but highly structured environment that fosters good sportsmanship, mastery of basic rugby skills and spirited competition. While teaching rugby is our number one priority, our campers will enjoy a variety of interactive activities including swimming, group games, hikes, movies and more.
