Camp's Description

Established in 1973, Wilderness Ventures has become the most widely recognized and experienced multi-environmental wilderness program for young adults. Each summer, a variety of expeditions embark upon sixteen to forty day programs designed to teach the acquisition of wilderness skills, leadership techniques and respect for the natural landscape. These goals are accomplished within a non-competitive, nurturing, and fun environment in which students gain self-confidence through challenging activities, learn about themselves and others, and attain a life-long appreciation for the spectacular beauty of these wilderness areas. Wilderness Skills: All Wilderness Ventures expeditions teach a variety of wilderness skills, including, but not limited to: expedition planning; backcountry safety; meal planning, purchasing and preparation; navigation; minimum impact camping; and landscape and natural history interpretation. Specific programs also include instruction in backpacking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering, snow and ice climbing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The acquisition of these skills develops self-confidence and prepares young adults for a lifetime of enjoyment in the outdoors. Leadership: We believe that leadership involves much more than leading a group safely through a wilderness or to the summit of a peak. All Wilderness Ventures expeditions emphasize the importance of learning how to make decisions and solve problems within a group. These skills are useful throughout life and well beyond the wilderness environment. The small group format and the emphasis on the group experience require that all expedition members learn to place their own personal needs behind the needs of the group. This group focus creates intimate bonding among expedition members and provides each individual with a valuable understanding of group cooperation that enhances social skills for success in life. Wilderness Appreciation: When we founded Wilderness Ventures in 1973, we were fortunate that access to the most spectacular wilderness environments was still available. We are privileged to be able to visit these natural treasures and our travel through these wilderness areas instills in us a responsibility for their future survival. On our expeditions, participants will learn not only the methods of minimum impact camping, but also gain a love for these places and a burning desire to see them saved so that future generations might someday have a similar experience.

I have gone on two WV trips and they were the most amazing experiences of my life so far! When I was 12 i went on the 16 day Yellowstone Teton Explorer trip and I absolutely loved it. The leaders were great and so helpful, and my fellow campers were incredible. By the end of the second day we were already one big family! I had an amazing time and discovered tons of new interests. I got kayaks for my birthday after the trip so i could continue my newfound passion for kayaking and i hike nearly every weekend. This trip was also a huge growing experience for me and i cried the day i had to leave. I was having such n amazing time i didnt miss home once. My second trip was a 20 day California Explorer trip and it lived up to my expectations after the first trip. They were both so amazing i cant pick a favorite. The California trip was a great mix of everything i love. It had backpacking, hiking, kayaking, and exploring new places. We spent some time at Monterey Bay Aquarium which was awesome, and spent our last day exploring San Francisco together. I cried when i left that trip too. I still talk to many of the people i have met on these to trips and i wouldnt trade the opportunities WV gave me for the world. I cannot wait for my next trip!

I went on a 25 expedition with Wilderness Ventures, spanning the states of Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The trip was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The WV leaders were great and the frienships I made on the trip were incredible. The trip was a great opportunity for me to not only experience the outdoors, but also learn a lot about myself as well. I highly recommend WV!

My Wilderness ventures trip last summer, in Jackson Hole, was the best trip ever! I would definently recommend any wilderness venture trips to anybody looking for a summer trip this year! In my trip, there were 13 students, and 2 counselors (MY counselors, David and Tina, were THE BEST COUNSELOURS EVER, they made the trip the best!! I love them so much!). The small groups made it so much fun, and we all knew each other extremely well in a matter of days. My favorite part was how close our group became in a couple of days! We all still keep in touch, and are already planning a camp reunion! We went zip lining, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, and i am already so excited for next summers trip, Costa Rica!
