The Magic of Rocky River, Nov 05, 2009
reviewer: April from
When I was 8 years old I had my first experience with Rocky River and I loved it so much I continued to go until I became a Junior Counselor, a total of 9 years. From the beginning RRR taught me that I was unique, that I was able to conquer my fears, could grow in ways I never expected, would learn to face life's obstacles with friends that loved me for exactly who I was and to laugh at life and myself. It was and still is, a respite. There is a magic to this place and it begins the minute you drive through the gate. The trees envelope you, the breeze awakens the senses, the horses and many other camp animals give you an appreciation for all that encompasses the universe and an incredible spirit rushes through you making you feel energized and relaxed at the same moment. As a girl and especially as a teenager I knew I was part of something special and was thankful to my family for giving me such a wonderful gift. My experiences and friendships at RRR gave me strength and compassion that I have used throughout my life with regards to my experiences of volunteering, my ability to get through the most challenging of situations with love, laughter and a sense of calm, my love of the environment, my capacity to be a peacemaker and my 'Keep at it' attitude that has served me on many occasions. This is a mantra at RRR and they teach you to never give up, that each step is a success and to never measure your successes to that of other people’s successes. Your successes are you own, to embrace and to be proud of. As part of the Alumni group, I am blessed to be able to go back and help out whenever and wherever I can. When I am there, my heart is full of so many amazing memories and I feel stronger and fuller. I still tear up when I sing certain songs or when I walk through areas of camp with strong memories. These are tears of joy. In addition, my love and appreciation of the unique friendships I have with my old camp buddies and the new friendships with other alumni that I have made, grow each year and are blessings immeasurable. I recommended Rocky River to a friend two summers ago and his daughter just finished her second year and is stronger and braver than my friend ever knew she could be and he credits Rocky River for these amazing traits. She can't wait to go back next year.

I love Rocky River, Nov 05, 2009
reviewer: Asinaustin from Austin, Texas
I love this camp! I would not be the same person had I not attended Rocky River Ranch for so many years as a child. I first attended when I was nine for two weeks and loved it so much that I attended for the entire month of June every year after until I was 16. I also worked as a counselor there when I was 20. I am still amazed and in awe of the subtle and mysterious ways that simple activities and experiences weave together to leave an indelible impression of love ... confidence ... appreciation on campers. They seem so simple there in the moment ... the singing of camp songs, Friendship Circle at the end of an evening program, the Cowpoke/Wrangler drawing, saddling a horse for the first time, scooting down the rapids ... but with each song, with each tug on the halter rope, with each stroke of the canoe oar, with each ring of "Goodnight, campers!" a new brush of color is being painted on a girl’s childhood. From those “colors” spring forth amazing women as evidenced by the many remarkable women that now call themselves Rocky River alumni — many of which, I still call friends. I look back now and realize that my experiences at Rocky River gave me the tools to thrive in a myriad of situations through high school, college and adult life — from traveling solo in Europe, to living with roommates in college, to organizing and building enthusiasm for projects at work. It all started at Rocky River where I was given the freedom to choose my own classes, encouraged to try new things, learned to live with all kinds of personalities, allowed to be silly, sing loud and escape any pigeon holes I'd been put in back home. I often say to friends, “If I have a daughter, it will not be a question of ‘whether’ I send her to Rocky River, just a matter of ‘when.’” I wouldn’t dream of cheating my own daughter of the amazing experience that is Rocky River Ranch.

Rocky River is our home away from home!, Nov 05, 2009

I would like to respond to the previous review because my daughter was in the cabin with that child and the mother is not telling the whole story. Suffice it to say, if your daughter is well adjusted and wants to go to camp, RRR is the best place on Earth for her. If you have decided to send your daughter to camp against her will, please send her someplace else so that the rest of the girls can enjoy their time there. This will be my daughter's 7th summer at RRR and I have never been disappointed in the quality of care she has gotten. I know Rue, Liz and Shanna personally and I know that they have the best interest of all the girls at heart. The staff of counselors is the best I have ever seen and the training they receive before camp is beyond compare. My daughter finished her first year in the leadership program with Liz last summer and she came home inspired and much more independent. Because of camp, she is now involved in service oriented groups at school and is determined to make a positive difference in our community. Rue, Liz and Shanna work tirelessly to enhance the lives of girls and young women every year and I commend them on the commitment it must take to get the job done. Many, many thanks to them for what they do so well!

If you have decided to force your daughter to go to camp against her will, send her someplace else so the rest of the girls can enjoy their time there. I am an alumni of RRR - I attended camp for 11 years. This will be my daughter's 7th summer at camp and we have never been disappointed in the quality of Rocky River. I have worked closely with Rue, Liz and Shanna and I trust them implicitly to have the best interest of my daughter at heart.
