As the center of the Five College Consortium, Amherst is home to students from the University of Massachusetts and Amherst, Smith, Hampshire and Mount Holyoke colleges. Even the most casual visitor will notice the impact of college students on this small, New England town: posters cover lampposts announcing concerts and coffee house speakers and excellent bookstores, independent music shops and good coffee are easy to find. The rolling Berkshire foothills are ideal for hiking and biking and the proximity of both Boston and New York City make Amherst a great base for college visits and exciting weekend trips.
