Disappointing Feb 15, 2010
reviewer: David Abend from mass
My son attended this camp for a few years (through summer '09). While he did enjoy most of it, as his parents we were troubled by the lack of leadership and role models by counselors and senior staff. There were larger issues such as the fact that counselors actually offered my son cigarettes on a overnight trip. (my son felt pressured to smoke and actually got sick). There were other issues that were more serious but because of a lack of definitive proof, I will not cite them in this forum. However, the information was coming from counselors themselves. In general, the atmosphere of the camp is like a soap opera with a great deal of drama focused on the counselors relationships with each other but not a great deal of focus on the kids. It was also clear that some counselors had greater power than senior camp staff...a bit of the 'inmates running the asylum". Despite all this, as I said my son did have a reasonably good time at the camp but that was because of the friends he made more than the way the camp was run. And despite our misgivings, he applied to be a CIT this summer. He was ultimately denied the CIT position which crushed him because prior to the decision date the Camp Director asked him to call him but then refused to take his calls for weeks. Obviously, you'll should make your own assessment of the camp based on your own research. But I will warn you that behind the down-home Maine, Rockwell-esque facade, there is a web of agenda's and immaturity that we are happy our son will not be dealing with this summer.
