Camp friendship - poor teenage supervision Jan 02, 2007

We were excited to try Camp Frienship for our 13 yr. old daughter, as we wanted her to gain confidence through challenging and fun activities. After one week of traditional camp, she set out on a week's adventure of rafting, biking and horsebackriding. We were surprised to learn that 13 yr olds and 16 yr olds were rooming together at the first week's traditional camp, as the difference between 7th grade and high school is enormous! It was also very disturbing to learn that there were sexual antics occurring, more reminiscent of fraternity pranks than a kids' camp. The most disturbing lapse in supervision occurred when the 2nd week off-site was conducted, as the two (male and female) counselors were romantically involved and not focused on the campers, displaying unacceptable personal behaviour and not being focused on providing a safe environment for the campers. Most appalling was the lack of concern by the camp director, who ultimately did not respond to these very distressing events.
