Camp No Fun Jun 24, 2008
reviewer: Robert King from Indina
This was my 11-year-old daughter's first camp experience. I fear it may be her last. It's hard to know where to begin. The food was awful, but the kids were forced to eat every bite they put on their plates. As a result my daughter put very little on her plate. This rule was applied to everyone except the preacher's kid. Because they wouldn't let the kids have snacks in the cabins, she mostly had to go without. Since returning home she has eaten with a ravenous appetite, grateful for every bite. She loves the Bible but was hoping to have a real camp experience too. But this seemed to be less camp than hard core revival, with hours spent nightly in church services, sans campfires and smores. They swam a lot, which was good. And played a few games. But she didn't seem to have much fun. We were disappointed to hear her say that she had to go to the bathroom at night but couldn't get a counselor to walk with her. So she had to find her way through the pitch black and strange wilderness noises to the bathroom. At least that was an outdoor adventure! The fundamentalist aspect of the camp ventured into legalism more than once. At one evening church service she was inspired by the music to dance, in the sense that she swayed and clapped her hands. Unfortunately, the preacher called her down publicly for dancing, embarrassing her greatly. When my wife attended the final program she was shocked to hear the minister relay an anecdote with graphic details about a man's accidental electrocution. There were major helpings of fire and brimstone but minimal doses of traditional camp fun.
