Fabulous traditional boys camp! Aug 21, 2009
reviewer: Anita Oudega from Long Beach, California
My son attended the second (3 week) session at O-AT-KA this summer (2009) and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the warmest, most professional staff you can imagine. From the get-go, our son was included in everything even though he knew no one and had never attended sleep-away camp before. The facilities are beautiful, classic, Maine summer camp buildings, many of which are original to its 1906 beginnings. They are rustic in the best sense! The lakeside setting is spectacular - Our son participated in woodworking, photography, pottery, tennis, and baseball - there is a place at this camp for every child regardless of their interest or ability. They go the extra mile to help the kids discover their strengths, try new things, and help them build on what they already know. Our son swam in the lake every day, went on several wilderness trips, raved about the food, joined the Galahad Order as a "lad", got to know tons of kids, and really was able to relax and be himself. He felt like such a part of this place after a very short time - it really is like one big family here. The first words out of his mouth on parent's visiting day were, "Mom! I really have to come back here next year! Can I??". Amazing to me was the counselor/camper ratio - there were 6 kids and 2 counselors in his cabin...the others were just as impressive. I highly recommend this camp to any parent who wants their son to have a traditional summer camp experience and come away feeling accomplished and happy - it's a very special place.
